WooCommerce Payments setup was a bit much

I decided to go with WooCommerce Payments for my new online shop. The setup was a bit more involved than I anticipated, with a few steps that weren't super clear from the start. Once it was up and running, transactions went through fine, and the fees seem competitive. Delivery was instant since it's a plugin. It's doing what I need it to do now, but I wish the initial onboarding was a bit smoother. Value is there, just the initial hurdle.

Jetpack consistency is key

I've been using Jetpack for a while now across a few sites. I recently renewed my Jetpack Backup plan, and it was the same smooth process as always. Never had an issue with backups, and it's nice to know I can rely on it. It's why I keep coming back for their other services too.

Got a good deal on WordPress.com

I was looking for a budget-friendly way to get a website going and saw they had a first-year discount on WordPress.com. It made the decision easy. The price was great for what I got, and I didn't feel like I was overpaying for features I wouldn't use. Definitely felt like I got good value for my money, especially with the discount.

Akismet works well

I installed Akismet on my blog. It immediately started catching spam comments. No issues with it. License key landed in my inbox within a minute. Very effective.

Decent, but a few small snags

I bought WooCommerce Bookings for a client's site. The ordering process was straightforward enough, and the extension downloaded without a hitch. Installation was fine, but I ran into a couple of small conflicts with an existing theme, nothing major, just took a bit of fiddling. Support was responsive when I submitted a ticket, but it took a day to get a clear answer. Overall, it's working as expected now, and the client likes the features. It's a solid tool once you get it dialed in, just be prepared for potential minor integration work depending on your setup.

Good for my small blog

I used WordPress.com for my little personal blog. It was pretty easy to set up, just followed the steps. I didn't need anything super fancy, just something simple to post my stuff. It works, and I didn't have to fuss with a lot of techie things. Pretty happy with it overall.

WooCommerce Subscriptions renewal price jumped significantly for me. Anyone else seeing this?

R Rahul87 1 month ago
Yeah, mine too. I had a promo rate for the first year, and it went up by like 30%. Kinda shocked when I saw the email.

I switched to annual billing early on, so I actually got a small discount on renewal. Always worth checking if annual is better value.

Depends on the extension sometimes, but for core stuff, annual is usually cheaper.

Good tip, I usually pay monthly.

Does that apply to all their extensions or just certain ones?

Finally tried the Jetpack Boost plugin. Speeds seem a bit better, but not a huge difference yet. Anyone had a big win with it?

R RahulK 1 week ago
For me, it was more about the combo. Boost plus a good caching plugin made the real difference. Jetpack alone was okay, but not mind-blowing.

WP Rocket works well with it.

Which caching plugin are you using?

A Arjun 1 week ago
Didn't do much for my site, honestly. Ended up sticking with a different solution for speed.

Which one?

Curious too.

I noticed a definite improvement on my main blog. Especially with the image lazy loading and critical CSS parts. You gotta make sure all the settings are configured right for your theme.

N NikhilS 1 week ago
Hmm, maybe I missed something in the config then. Will recheck.

Is there a money-back guarantee for Automattic services? What if I sign up and it's not what I expected?

M Marcus 2 months ago
Yeah, there's usually a money-back guarantee period. I think it's like 30 days for most things, but you'd wanna double check for the specific product you're looking at.

I returned a plan once, it was pretty straightforward. Just cancelled within the trial window and got my money back. No hassle.

Thinking of switching my site over to WordPress.com from Wix. Anyone know if they have any deals for new users? Or like a student discount maybe?

C Chris Vargas 2 months ago
Yeah, they usually have intro offers, especially for the first year. Seen 20-50% off before. Also, I think there's definitely a student discount option, you'd probably need to verify with your student ID or something.

G Greg 2 months ago
Check around Black Friday/Cyber Monday too, that's when they really push deals. But for students, yeah, I've heard they do something.

Hey, I'm trying to get Jetpack for my new site and I saw a bundle deal mentioned somewhere. Is that still a thing? Like if I get Jetpack and something else?

B Brett Hughes 2 months ago
Pretty sure Jetpack bundles are still a thing. I got one last year with Jetpack and something else, maybe Boost? It saved a decent amount compared to buying separate.
1
J Josh 2 months ago
Yeah, they often bundle Jetpack with other tools like security or backup features. Worth looking for those on their site directly, usually pretty obvious.

Does anyone know if Automattic accepts PayPal? Or is it just credit cards? My CC is maxed out lol.

N Nick Marsh 2 months ago
AFAIK, they take PayPal. I used it for my WooCommerce subscription a few months ago.

A Amber Lindqvist 2 months ago
Pretty sure I've seen PayPal as an option on checkout. They generally have a few different ways to pay.

If I sign up for an annual plan, does that give me a better discount than going month-to-month? Trying to save some cash.

T Tara 1 month ago
Definitely. Annual billing almost always gives you a discount compared to paying monthly. It's like an incentive to commit for the year.

N Neil Z. 1 month ago
Yep, it's standard practice. You get a better rate for an annual commitment.

Thinking of getting some WooCommerce extensions. Do they ever go on sale? Or is it full price always?

M Marcus Brooks 2 months ago
WooCommerce extensions definitely go on sale! Keep an eye out for seasonal sales like Black Friday or even just random 'extension sales' throughout the year. They happen.
6
B Ben 2 months ago
Yeah, they have sales pretty regularly. Don't pay full price if you can wait a bit, unless you need it urgently. I've snagged some good deals.
